Initiate construction of 10 new dams in England and Wales
The Issue
In 2026, I stood at the site of the last dam constructed in the UK. In 1992 England and Wales had just resolved a major water shortage issue, and it seemed like a turning point. Since then, more than three decades have passed, and in that time, our population has surged by 7.8 million. But shockingly, our water infrastructure has not evolved in tandem with our exponentially growing needs.
We live in an era where climate change poses unpredictable challenges to our environment, and nowhere is this more critical than our water supply. The United Kingdom risks facing severe water scarcity if immediate action isn’t taken. Constructing new dams across England and Wales isn't just beneficial; it’s a necessity. These structures can help capture the heavy rainfalls we experience, store water efficiently for dry seasons, and mitigate flood risks that threaten our communities.
A stark reality highlighted by the UK’s Environment Agency in recent reports is that without proactive measures, parts of the UK could be at risk of running out of water within the next 25 years. This calls for urgent investment into our nation's water infrastructure. Establishing 10 new dams is a concrete first step toward securing the water supply for current and future generations.
Dams provide a multitude of benefits beyond just water storage. They can generate clean, renewable hydroelectric power, support biodiversity through the formation of new aquatic habitats, and even drive local economies by creating jobs and boosting tourism. The strategic locations we propose for these dams have been selected to optimise these benefits while maintaining environmental balances.
By initiating such projects, we bolster our resilience against climate-related water shortages, protect vulnerable communities from floods, and ensure our economic stability. We’re calling on the UK government, local authorities, and relevant environmental bodies to commit to building 10 new dams by 2030.
Join us in advocating for a future where our water resources are secure, sustainable, and sufficient for everyone. Sign this petition to urge immediate and decisive action toward building these essential structures. Together, we can safeguard our water and our futures.
