As a proud citizen of New Zealand, I am deeply concerned about our national identity. Our current flag, an 1864 design, no longer represents the diverse and vibrant country we have become. It is nearly identical to the Australian flag with only minor variations - a fact that often leads to confusion and misrepresentation on international platforms.

In 2016, we had an opportunity to change this when a referendum was held offering us the choice between our existing flag or a new design. However, despite public voting for four different options in the previous year, we chose to retain our old symbol.

But times have changed since then; so has our nation. We are not the same country as we were in 1864 or even in 2016. Therefore, it is time for us to reconsider this decision and initiate another referendum for changing our national flag.

A new flag could better represent who we are today – diverse yet united under one banner that truly signifies what it means to be a Kiwi in this modern age. This isn't just about aesthetics; it's about asserting our unique identity on the world stage and setting ourselves free from past constraints.
