Induct Jethro Tull into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The Issue
As a passionate fan and advocate for the unique music style that Jethro Tull has brought to life, I am calling for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This band, led by Ian Anderson (vocals, flute & guitar) blended skilled musicianship and an innovative approach to rock music … and they’ve pushed the boundaries of multiple musical genres since they first formed in 1968.
Over their career, they have released 21 studio albums and sold over 60 million copies worldwide (source: Billboard) and earned a Grammy in 1989 for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental with their album Crest of a Knave. Yet despite these accomplishments, they remain unrecognized by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Their mix of hard rock with elements of folk, classical, and jazz was groundbreaking at the time and continues to inspire artists today. They were unwilling pioneers of progressive rock, a category that has since become a staple in modern music.
While Ian Anderson was the frontman, most - if not all - pundits of the band recognize legendary guitarist, Martin Barre, as the complementary force behind the sound and success of Tull. Composing and performing some of the most notable lead guitar riffs and solos in rock history, Barre’s 43-year contribution to Tull remains undeniable and interconnected to the unique studio recordings and the stage spectacle of Tull’s live shows.
Other instrumental members of Tull’s rise into the rock legend category include Clive Bunker (drums & percussion), John Evan (keyboards), Dee Palmer (keyboards & orchestration), Jeffrey Hammond (Bass), Barriemore Barlow (drums & percussion) … among other long-term band members Dave Pegg (bass), Doane Perry (drums & percussion), Andrew Giddings (keyboards) and Jonathan Noyce (bass).
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame exists to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development, and perpetuation of rock and roll. By this criterion alone, Jethro Tull more than qualifies for induction.
It's time we honor these trailblazers for their contributions to music history. Let's ensure Jethro Tull receive the recognition they have long deserved from The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame! Please sign this petition if you agree!
