Palm Oil plantations contribute greatly to deforestation of the rainforest, air pollution, human rights issues, and the loss of animal habitat for endangered species.

To keep up with the incredibly high demand for this cheaply produced oil, acres of rainforest are being cut down - leading to a loss of animal habitat for endangered species. For example, the quest for palm oil has led to the death of an estimated 100,000 orangutans, who are often cruelly shot dead and left to die. 

The conversion of rainforest into plantations also contributes to climate change as the process releases high amounts of carbon emissions into the air. The slash and burn techniques of the farmers also cause uncontrollable forest fires which often lead to hazardous haze to the surrounding cities. 

Oftentimes, palm oil companies employ vulnerable young children as child laborers to work on the plantations. These children are exposed to hazardous chemicals and harsh conditions. Many of them experience malnutrition, stunted growth, or even early death. 

We have to find more sustainable ways to grow and consume palm oil. By using it in biofuels, we are driving up the demand for palm oil in a totally unsustainable manner. Let's do our part and appeal for palm oil to be removed from biofuels!!
