Do you know how many orangutans die because of deforestation from palm oil planting? Since 1999 about 150,000 orangutans have died that is about 7,500 a year and about 20 per day.

“Indonesia’s rainforests – the third largest in the world after the Amazon and the Congo Basin – have been razed, burned and logged to make way for oil palm plantations. Between 2001 and 2018, 16% of the country’s tree cover disappeared, and it’s estimated that between 2008 and 2010, palm oil plantations were responsible for almost 60% of deforestation.” News.mongabay.com.

“The fires that swept through Indonesia’s forests in 2019 are a graphic illustration: 80% of them, according to officials, were started to clear land for oil palm plantations.” News.mongabay.com.

The Indonesian and Malaysian government have not done anything to help with the deforestation and deaths of orangutans as they are the biggest producers of palm oil with Indonesia having 52% of all palm oil and Malaysia having 26% globally. You might not know but palm oil is in about 50% of all packaged food that you eat, some examples are: chocolate, chips and biscuits. Palm oil is also used in clothes, shampoos, toothpaste and even in some biodiesels for cars!

One main reason you probably do not hear about palm oil in foods is because it is labelled as “vegetable oil” and many other names which is very deceptive and may cause you to buy a product without even knowing that it has palm oil. This should be illegal.

The ‘National Geographic’ have stated that there are 41 endangered species and the ‘Sumatran orangutan’ is one of them and it is also one of the few critically endangered. There are nowadays about 55,000 – 65,000 orangutans left in the wild, which is mostly due to the fact that about 80% of all orangutan’s habitat has been destroyed due to deforestation for palm oil farms. Orangutans are only found in the rain forests of the islands of Borneo (Malaysia) and Sumatra (Indonesia).

If we want to start to make a change for orangutan’s wellbeing and health, we must pull away from the critically endangered point they are at right now by: drastically reduce the amount of deforestation and palm oil planting, labelling all the products that contain palm oil in them, raise funds for awareness and protest against unsustainable palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia.

Make sure you read the label, so you don’t buy anything that will contribute to anymore deforestation and deaths of orangutans.
