Friends, If you were to search "Mike Pence" and pardon on Twitter, you would find hundreds, perhaps thousand of tweets. Most of these are comments on and links to the recent BuzzFeed article on Keith Cooper's case. This is great! If you want a strategy for this weekend, if you are on Twitter, just forward as many of those tweets as you are interested in doing to @Elaine_Quijano, @timkaine, and @HolcombForIN. In a letter to the Indianapolis Star, reader Matthew Hook calls upon the Indiana gubernatorial candidates to answer this "most important question": "will you pardon Keith Cooper as soon as you get into office. While it relates to only one man, it goes to the fundamental issue of who we are as a people. Is our state really saying that even though we acknowledge Cooper spent nine years of his life in prison for something he did not do, we are going to continue to deny him the right to vote, force him to carry the label of felon and the baggage it entails and then tie up our judicial system needlessly if he wants to clear his record. Who does that to one of their citizens?" This is a question basic to a people's sense of justice, which is why I think you have signed this petition. Mr. Hook, thank you for this letter. John Gregg has affirmed that he would sign a pardon for Keith Cooper. We haven't yet heard from Eric Holcomb, so please continue to contact his campaign. The contact information is in the previous update. I should clarify one thing: State laws vary, but in both Indiana and Illinois, where Keith currently lives, persons who had been incarcerated may vote once they have been released from prison. There are plenty of reason Keith needs his pardon, but thankfully, he gets to vote. I haven't asked him whom he is going to vote for, but I have a good guess who it's not. Thank you for your help, Jack Heller
