Make feminine hygiene products sales tax-exempt in Indiana

The Issue

In the past two years there have been efforts by Indiana House Representatives to eliminate the state's sales tax on feminine hygiene products, but all have failed. Feminine hygiene products, such as tampons and sanitary pads, are items that women use during their periods to live more comfortably as they go through their cycle. An average woman today will have around 450 periods over 37 years of her life. While the average cost for a box of tampons in Indiana is currently around $6, it is easy to see how that cost could build to a significant number over multiple decades. There are thousands of lower income women in our state right now that have to deal with this cost and weigh it against other necessities such as food.  Other medically related products that are essential to a normal, healthy, and enjoyable life that are sales tax-exempt in Indiana include hearing aids and blood monitors. Our state government should have a tax code that acts fairly to individual consumers and citizens, which means that women should not have to pay additional sales tax for items that their bodies require in order to lead a healthy and functioning lifestyle.
