Save A Life: Clear Butler & IN State Road 18 Stop Sign & Intersection Obstructions

The Issue

On Saturday morning, June 20th, 2020, an 18 year old young woman, Katie Jo Maynus, was in a tragic accident at this interestion that took her life. Witnesses and the police statement said that Katie Jo did not stop at the Butler stop sign and continued into traffic on IN State Road 18 in Marion, Indiana. Her car was hit by a semi driving east on 18, with a driver who tried but could not avoid the collision.

Over the years, residents at the Butler & 18 intersection and the Marion Fire Department have expressed their concerns regarding the trees and their branches that cover the stop sign and reduce visibility to oncoming traffic, but have yet to see anything done to make the sign and intersection clearly visible. Since the accident, one resident placed a make shift stop sign to hopefully grab the attention of any future oncoming drivers.

So that another accident like this does not happen, the family and friends of Katie Jo with others of the community would like to see action taken by the appropriate and responsible parties to remove the three trees obstructing the sign, as well as, the tree obstructing the line of vision for oncoming traffic at the intersection removed.
