END THE TAMPON TAX IN INDIANA

END THE TAMPON TAX IN INDIANA
The Issue
In Indiana, menstruators have to pay a "tampon tax" on necessary menstrual items. Menstrual hygiene products are considered "non-essential" in Indiana, so sales tax applies. According to Period Equity, the state of Indiana makes almost $5-million annually in tampon tax revenue. Meanwhile, BBQ potato chips aren't taxed as a "luxury item." In Indiana, if you have a prescription for Propecia or Viagra, you do not pay taxes, yet menstruators are still paying a ridiculous tax for basic health care items.
In 2019, one in four women struggled to purchase period products due to low income. Many in the U.S. are forced to make a terrible choice between buying food or menstrual products. Those who are unable to afford tampons and pads are at risk of isolation, infection, and even missed days of school and work. The "tampon tax" is another way that men in power are trying to keep women and girls out of our workplaces and schools. The tax is another barrier that low-income menstruators and families face just to have access to a basic health care product.
It is time for tax-free menstrual products in Indiana, period. It is time to stop treating menstruators unfairly because they bleed. It is time to end period inequality. It is time to end the tampon tax in Indiana, no excuses.
EDIT: I changed the language to include the struggles of all menstruators! Not only women menstruate! :)
