Say No To Crackers! Save Environment and Celebrate Green Diwali.

Subject: - Requesting the people of India to stop buying and bursting crackers as they contribute a lot in noise pollution, air pollution, child labour, life taking fire accidents, etc.
Why Hazardous Diwali, Why not Green Diwali?
I want the people of India to rethink and make an end to this life-threatening issue which is still around us and destroying several lives.
How the environment and all living creatures are affected due to the fireworks?
These crackers are made up of many hazardous chemicals like Sulphur nitrates, magnesium, nitrogen dioxide, etc. which produces harmful gases when burnt and then it dissolves in the atmosphere targeting our respiratory systems causing serious ailments like asthma, shortness of breath, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. Here, you might be thinking that we live in our safe houses so we don’t care what is happening outside. That is where the problem arises as you go blind on these issues even though they are in front of you. Dear friend, you are safe but what about the other people who do not have their own house? They have no choice but to breathe in that polluted air. It also leads to a sudden decrease in air quality levels.
Not only the people who are bursting crackers but what about the people who are involved in its preparation. Children are the cheapest labour as they think, so children are the major employees in these fireworks factories causing an increase in child labour. Bursting firecrackers is the same as burning the childhood of the children who die due to accidents and inhuman working conditions in firecracker factories.
You can’t do this to your brothers and sisters as we all have taken the pledge - “All Indians are our brothers and sisters”. Remember!
These crackers are not only harmful to humans but to other living creatures on the planet as well.
Plants and trees are one of them. Toxic gases and chemicals emitted during the bursting of crackers affects the rate at which CO2 enters leaves, or water vapour emanates through leaves. Moreover, transportation systems of plants and trees are disturbed as minerals, food and water don’t reach leaves and stems of the plant leaving them dry. The metabolic rate of the plant is also disturbed affecting its growth – as claimed by a Senior Scientist at National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI).
Memorize this - “If you can’t grow a plant or a tree, then we don’t have the right to destroy it either.”
Animals and birds are also affected. Dogs are one of them. The noise and unpredictability of fireworks lead many dogs to perceive them as a threat. This triggers their fight-or-flight response. The same goes with the birds forcing them to leave their nests and migrate away from their home leaving their children behind.
Memorize this – “Live and let others live.”
Other effects of Firecrackers
- The suspended particulate matter (SPM) levels rise significantly during Diwali. This causes throat, nose and eye-related problems which can later develop into adverse health issues.
- Firecrackers have much more severe effects in people with heart, respiratory or nervous system disorders.
- They can aggravate problems for people suffering from colds, allergies or coughs and can also cause congestion of the throat and chest.
- The noise pollution caused by the fireworks causes hearing problems as well as deafness if the intensity is high enough.
- They can also cause water contamination and acid rains.
- They result in air pollution that creates carcinogenic Sulphur compounds and airborne arsenic effect.
- The green light produced in fireworks displays comes from barium, which is radioactive and poisonous. The blue colour produced from copper compounds comes from dioxins linked to cancer.
- They are responsible for the deaths of people due to fire accidents.
- They cause a public nuisance to the people who are sick or require peace.
- They cause smog which is responsible for most of the car accidents.
- People get disturbed when they are asleep because of fireworks. Everyone has the right to sleep.
- Unnecessary waste of money for those parents who are finding it hard to buy them because of its expensiveness.
What can be the possible solution to this problem?
The only solution I believe is the people of this nation themselves and their understanding. Unless they stop buying and bursting the crackers, there is no stop to this problem. The other solution would be the Supreme Court enforcing the law on the people to stop bursting crackers like what has happened in the national capital - Delhi this year. The people who want to have crackers will still have it even though if it is illegal. But I think the people of this nation are smart enough in implementing a change. Fireworks factories would close one day if people stop buying it as we all did by putting a ban on Chinese products together.
For those who think how can we celebrate Diwali without firecrackers?
Let me tell you an incident that became an eye-opener for me. Around 7-8 years back, I was one of those persons who just loved to have crackers and burst them on Diwali. Despite having the knowledge about the effects of firecrackers, I always ignored all of them and enjoyed Diwali with the fireworks. One day my father severely injured his leg by a firecracker called ‘Chakri’ and I got temporary blindness when a firecracker ‘Kothi’ exploded like a bomb in front of my eyes. Luckily my family being the follower of Jainism always told me that bursting firecrackers was always against humanity. From that point, I understood and realized the importance of life. Since then I’m celebrating Diwali without fireworks and I’m feeling great as I’m doing good to the environment as well as other living creatures.
People who didn’t find my story promising can read Ramayana. Ramayana has not a single mention about the fireworks. The very first Diwali that was celebrated when Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya also didn’t have fireworks, instead, the whole city was lit up with ‘Diyas/Deepaks’ (Oil Lamps). That is why the Diwali is known as the festival of lights and not a festival of fireworks and pollution.
If you search about fireworks, then you’ll find that firecrackers were originated from our neighbour China. Like other Chinese products, we can also put a ban on firecrackers, can’t we?
So yes, Diwali can be celebrated without fireworks.
- Diwali is the festival of lights, so lit your house with ‘Diyas/Deepaks’ and various other lights and lamps.
- Spread the happiness to your loved ones.
- If not necessary don’t buy firecrackers instead donate some amount to various NGOs or other organizations or directly reach out to people and help them with whatever they need.
- Eat lots of sweets and have fun.
- Play physical games with your friends and family members if possible.
- Buy and wear new clothes.
- Visit your relatives and greet them.
This is how Diwali should be celebrated and not by polluting the environment. Remember why Diwali was celebrated – “The win of Good over Evil.”
