For years our school’s name has been Indian Creek and our team name has been the Redskins. Redskins is a racial slur often used against Native Americans to describe the color of their skin. And for years now we have tried to stray away from the Indian in Indian Creek, for example seeing shirts with just and IC or a just saying Creek or ICHS. I say it’s time for a change and to stray away from the oppressive language used as our school name and team names. Considering right now many of other schools and teams are doing the same thing such as the professional football team, Washington Redskins in the process of changing their name.  Another example being we use songs like the war chant in our football’s pregame in which we chant and use mimicking sounds that the Native American Tribes would have. We also have a band in which the majorettes wear Headdresses an ornamental covering sacred to the Native American culture  traditionally worn by male leaders of the American Plains Indians who have earned a place of great respect in their tribe. Originally they were sometimes worn into battle, but they are now primarily used for ceremonial occasions. I fear that if we don’t change our names we could have organizations not want to sponsor us or our teams. People in the community could start protests that may tarnish the legacy of the school as a whole. The consequences of our school not changing our team or school name could be dire So please sign to stop the oppressive language and activities our school uses.
