Increased security for Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson)

The Issue

The increase of crime in Toronto, especially in and around Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University) has become a worrying point for many students that attend.

Everyone at this univesity knows at least one other person who has been harassed or assaulted, and there have been too many instances of violence at this university.

There is almost no security at this university and the safety of students is at risk. The ratio of the amount of security guards to the amount of students is staggering. Only one building in the university has people who check student IDs, so in most major Toronto MetU buildings, there are no ID checks. Anybody, student or not, can get into these buildings.

Kerr Hall is one of those areas. Repeated reports of sexual violence just in this building has shown that we need to do something for the safety of students. There have also been multiple reports of students witnessing stabbings, flashings, and other forms of violence around the university.

Being that Toronto Metropolitan University is in a high traffic area, right on Yonge-Dundas square, security measures need to be implemented. All of the students that attend Toronto MetU have a right to feel safe at the place they pay thousands of dollars a year to learn.
