Increase Wages for Paraprofessionals in SPED Classrooms

Increase Wages for Paraprofessionals in SPED Classrooms
The Issue
My personal journey as a paraprofessional in a structured classroom has brought me to this moment. This is my second year in the role, yet I'm earning just $17 an hour, paid monthly. Given the scope and importance of our tasks, this remuneration seems undervalued.
Paraprofessionals across American schools, especially in Special Education (SPED) structured classrooms, offer direct support to students who have unique learning needs. Our work impacts the lives of these students, helping them to overcome various challenges and facilitating them in their learning process.
However, the compensation for this critical role is far below what it should be. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, paraprofessionals' median pay in 2020 was only $16.90 per hour. Given the importance and the demanding nature of our job, this simply isn't fair or sufficient. To ensure the best quality professionals are attracted to this rewarding yet demanding profession, it is paramount that compensation levels are reassessed.
Increased wages will not only foster a recognition of the value paraprofessionals bring to the SPED classrooms, but will also improve the living conditions for these hardworking professionals who play a significant role in shaping the futures of our students.
I call on the decision-makers across American school districts to provide a fair wage for paraprofessionals, in line with our vital contribution to education. Please endorse this petition to establish recognition and proper remuneration for all paraprofessionals across the United States.
