Increase the Speed Limit to 35 MPH in Auburn Technology Park West

The Issue

Everyday, I commute to work in Auburn Technology Park West, much like countless others do in our working class community. We are sustained by our labors in this commercial heavy district – an engine of economic activity. However, we find our productivity challenged, not by lack of effort or willingness, but by a speed limit set at an unreasonably low 25 mph.

The current speed limit seems more suited for residential areas with children playing, not a bustling commercial space like ours where there is no foreseeable harm in allowing a speed limit that matches the national average for such areas - 35 mph. On a daily basis, I see the frustration on the faces of motorists who are then looked upon as wrongdoers by local law enforcement, simply for navigating at speeds typical in this type of area.

Research has shown that well-set speed limits increase compliance, improve road safety, and keep traffic moving efficiently. According to the Federal Highway Administration, speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile of free-flowing traffic (FHWA, 2018), and by this recommendation, our current speed limit falls short.

Therefore, we call upon the relevant authorities to increase the speed limit in Auburn Technology Park West from 25 mph to 35 mph and align it with typical speeds observed in commercial areas across the nation. This will not only make commuting more efficient but may also reduce the unnecessary concentration of law enforcement resources on this area.

We urge every concerned citizen to lend their voice to this cause - sign this petition and let us bring about meaningful change in our community.
