Increase the Speed Limit on Tar Landing Road and Holly Ridge Road to 55 MPH

Increase the Speed Limit on Tar Landing Road and Holly Ridge Road to 55 MPH

The Issue

I am a resident on Tar Landing Road and Holly Ridge Road where the current speed limit is 45 mph. This speed limit is too low, causing some motorists to drive as slow as 30 mph, creating unnecessary traffic and frustration among fellow drivers. This not only affects the daily lives of many of us who live or commute here, but also questions the ability of some drivers, who, because of the low limit, seem fearful to drive on the road they live. Such drivers should not have any fear driving at the appropriate legal speeds. I believe that if the speed limit is increased to 55 mph, it will restore smooth traffic flow and reduce driver frustration.

Studies have shown that roads with speed limits set to the 85th percentile speed are safest (source: National Motorists Association). The 85th percentile speed on Tar Landing and Holly Ridge Road was closer to 55 mph, as per a past study conducted by our local traffic commission, suggesting that most of the drivers feel comfortable driving at this speed. Consequently, the current speed limit of 45 mph is below the safe speed limit suggested by the 85th percentile rule, making it not just inconvenient, but potentially unsafe too.

We are therefore calling on our local leaders and traffic commission to consider our plea, evaluate the situation, and take appropriate action. Increasing the speed limit on Tar Landing Road and Holly Ridge Road from 45 mph to 55 mph will not only improve the traffic flow, but also make the roads safer for all of us using them. Please join me in making our streets safer and more efficient. Sign the petition!
