Increase the Savings Allowance for Benefits Claimants in tune with Inflation

The Issue

I, like many other benefits claimants, have aspirations. One of those aspirations is to become a homeowner. Unfortunately, the current savings allowance for benefits claimants is proving a considerable hurdle in achieving that dream. Purchasing a home, especially in my area, requires a significant deposit, a sum far exceeding the current savings allowance.

DWP allows £6000 savings allowance without deduction from them for most benefits. Above that amount they will deduct £4.35 per £250 up to the cut amount of £16000.

Inflation has seen a steady rise over the years. Unfortunately, the savings allowance for benefits claimants has not followed suit. According to the Office for National Statistics, UK's inflation rate was 11.1 in October 2022, which is the highest rate in 41 years. However, the savings allowance has failed to reflect this rise. An increase in the benefits claimants' savings allowance, in line with inflation, seems not just beneficial, but essential.

The current situation is serving as a significant barrier for benefits claimants seeking to improve their financial standing. Therefore, it's time for decision-makers to reassess the situation and act in a manner that promotes financial growth for everyone, regardless of their current position. Please sign this petition and help bring about a necessary change allowing benefits claimants, like me, to chase our dreams.
