Increase the personal needs allowance for nursing home residents
Increase the personal needs allowance for nursing home residents
The Issue
My mother lives in a nursing home, and like many others, she faces the harsh reality of an outdated Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) that simply cannot meet the costs of today's world. The current PNA stands at a mere $50 per month and has not seen an increase since 1988! That's over 35 years without adjustment for inflation or the rising cost of living. In today's economy, this amount falls significantly short of what is needed for essential personal items and basic goods.
Imagine trying to afford toiletries, clothing, or even a simple phone call to loved ones on just $50 per month. These necessities, which bring dignity and improve quality of life, are often out of reach for those relying on the PNA. During a time when the Consumer Price Index has more than doubled, it's unreasonable and unfair to expect our loved ones to stretch this meager allowance any further.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cumulative rate of inflation in the United States since 1988 is approximately 141%, which means that if the PNA kept pace with inflation, it should be more than double what it is today. The PNA is crucial for individuals in nursing homes to maintain a semblance of independence, purchasing items that are not covered by the facility, like personal hygiene products, stationery, and small comforts like snacks or magazine subscriptions.
To rectify this, we urge lawmakers to review and increase the Personal Needs Allowance to a meaningful amount that considers the current cost of living. A revision in policy would provide an invaluable support to residents of nursing homes, ensuring they live with dignity and autonomy rather than hardship and dependency. By adjusting the PNA to at least $120 per month, we can offer them a measure of freedom and improve their day-to-day lives.
Our seniors have worked hard throughout their lives, contributing to society and building the communities we cherish. Now, they deserve our support during their golden years. Raising the PNA is not just a financial necessity—it's a moral obligation. We must stand for compassion, fairness, and respect for our elders.
