Increase the pay for dental nurses
The Issue
As a dental nurse myself, I've experienced first-hand the significant pay discrepancies within the healthcare sector, particularly among Dental Care Professionals (DCPs). It's disheartening to see how dental nurses are undervalued compared to other professionals in the same field. Dentists boast of their base salaries being upwards of £65,000, while hygienists and therapists earn over £45,000. Yet, dental nurses, whose roles are equally vital, find themselves earning a mere £24,000 as a base salary, which stagnates with minimal year-on-year growth.
I have worked alongside many dedicated dental nurses aged between 30 and 60, most with families to provide for. The financial strain means they often can't afford the luxury of taking days off, unlike dentists who can manage to work part-time owing to their higher salaries. This disparity is not just about wages but reflects a broader issue of respect and recognition for the hard work that dental nurses contribute to the healthcare system.
Dental nurses play a crucial role in ensuring patient care and safety. They manage clinical tasks and time (as they see on average 16-20 patients a day and still ensure the dentist doesn't run overtime and the patient's time isn't wasted), maintain dental instruments, assist with procedures, and provide patient support and education. The importance of their responsibilities does not match the inadequacy of their compensation.
To address this, we urge the National Health Service and private dental practices to re-evaluate and adjust the salary structures of dental nurses. We recommend implementing a revised pay scale that acknowledges their expertise, dedication, and the indispensable service they provide in patient care.
Adopting this change would not only enhance the livelihoods of dental nurses but also improve job satisfaction, reduce turnover, and ultimately lead to better care for patients. Recognizing the invaluable work of dental nurses can lead to a more motivated workforce, thereby increasing the quality of service across the dental sector.
Sign this petition to bring much-needed change and to ensure dental nurses receive fair and equitable compensation for their invaluable contributions to healthcare.
