Increase the number of driving points in the UK

The Issue

With the rapid advancements in technology and the widespread use of surveillance, it has become increasingly easy for drivers to inadvertently accumulate points on their licenses. I've personally experienced this due to the plethora of cameras lining our roads and the recent introduction of AI cameras. These devices are unforgiving, and even the slightest error can lead to penalty points. The original system, established with a limit of 12 points in 1988, no longer reflects the realities of modern driving.

In the past 35 years, both driving environments and vehicle safety features have evolved significantly. Today's cars are equipped with numerous advancements, helping drivers navigate roads more safely. Yet, the point system remains unchanged, disregarding these developments and the increased surveillance drivers face.

Statistics show that the number of cameras has surged, with over 7,000 speed cameras currently operating across the UK. This figure doesn't even account for the numerous AI cameras that further scan our movements. The combination of these factors means that UK drivers are subjected to an unprecedented level of monitoring and risk of penalization for minor infractions.

The reality is that accidental breaches of the speed limit or minor infringements are far more common with these surveillance systems in place. Drivers like myself are paying the price, potentially losing our licenses, not due to reckless driving but due to heightened monitoring and outdated policies.

We propose increasing the point limit from 12 to 15, aligning the system with modern-day technology and challenges. Such a change would give drivers, especially those who rely on their vehicles for their livelihood, a fairer chance. It acknowledges the technological interventions designed to safeguard roads and adapts to contemporary driving conditions.

Join us in urging policymakers to review and amend the current points system. A revised approach would not only be a fair allocation in light of current surveillance efforts but also reflect the modern driving landscape that has transformed vastly since 1988. Sign this petition to support this much-needed change in our driving laws, and help us make a difference for all UK drivers.
