The Issue

My child passed away on the 12th of August, 2024. In the weeks following, as I visited the cemetery, I was struck by the sheer number of children's graves that lay unmarked, simply because their families could not afford a headstone. This heartbreaking reality is not unique to my experience, but is a widespread issue across the UK. Financially struggling families are forced to leave their lost children without a permanent marker, depriving them of the dignity and remembrance they deserve.

The Children's Funeral Fund in the UK is a crucial support for bereaved families, covering the cost of a child's funeral up to a certain extent. However, it tragically falls short of providing for a headstone – a fundamental component of a funeral and a vital symbol of remembrance. A headstone stands not just as a marker, but as a place where families and friends can come to grieve, remember, and find solace.

Families already bear the unimaginable pain of losing a child; they should not have to shoulder the additional financial burden of marking their resting place out of their own pocket, a move that could cost thousands. In 2019, the Children’s Funeral Fund was introduced to alleviate this financial burden, yet excluding headstones from this fund is a glaring oversight leaving wounds that never truly heal.

Including the cost of headstones in the Children's Funeral Fund is an essential step in providing complete support to grieving families. This change would not drastically increase the fund's expenses but would provide immeasurable peace and justice to those it aims to support. According to data from the National Funeral Directors Federation, the average cost of a child's headstone can range from £500 to £2000, which is a small price for the significant comfort it brings to families.

We cannot forget or ignore these hidden graves in our local cemeteries. We urge the UK government and relevant stakeholders to amend the Children's Funeral Fund to ensure it covers the cost of headstones.

Please sign this petition to support families in their time of grief and ensure that every child has the dignified memorial they deserve.

**Petition to the UK Government: Expand the Children’s Funeral Fund to Cover Headstones in Honor of Amira Williams and Other Grieving Families**

Dear Members of Parliament,

I am writing to you with a heavy heart and a plea for justice and compassion. My beloved daughter, Amira Williams, tragically passed away on 12th August 2024 aged 17yrs. Throughout her life Amira had complex special neeeds, I was her full-time carer and lived on benefits as a single mother.

Amira’s story was shared by the press, shedding light on the heartbreaking realities faced by many families who lose their children far too soon. The pain of losing her has been overwhelming, but what haunts me most is the thought of her resting place —my grandparents would call it a “pauper’s grave,”  as the current support does not cover the cost of a headstone. The profound sense of loss echoes deep within my soul and has inspired me to create Sleep Tight Angel, a heartfelt initiative born from love and hope that no family should be denied a dignified memorial for their child.

Losing a child is an unthinkable tragedy. Yet, the emotional suffering is compounded when families are unable to provide a lasting tribute— a headstone that bears witness to a life loved and lost. A headstone is more than stone; it is a symbol of enduring love, remembrance, and respect. It brings comfort to grieving families, helps preserve the memory of a child’s unique presence in this world.

I urge the UK Government to expand the Children’s Funeral Fund to include the cost of headstones. No family should be forced to choose between their grief and financial hardship. Every child’s life, no matter how brief, leaves an imprint on our hearts. They deserve to be remembered with dignity—an eternal testament to their significance.

Let us show that we value every child's life by ensuring their final resting place reflects love, respect, and compassion.

In memory of Amira and countless others, we implore you to:

- Extend the Children’s Funeral Fund to cover headstone costs
- Recognize that dignity in death is a fundamental human right
- Support grieving families with compassion and understanding during their darkest hours.
-Dignity in remembrance

My goal is in the face of unimaginable loss.
-Honor the memory of our children.
-Help parents to create a symbol of love, hope, and remembrance.
-Supporting families through their grief, that they are not alone and our country stands with them, to help them stand when they can not.
-That no parent should be left with only memories—every child deserves a lasting tribute.
- Supporting families through their pain.
- A symbol of love, hope, and remembrance.
- No family should bear this burden alone
- Ensuring dignity for every child's final resting place.

Let us stand together to provide compassionate, meaningful support to families during their most difficult time. Our children deserve to be remembered with love, respect, and dignity—help us make that a reality.

Please stand with us in the fight for justice and compassion. Let us transform grief into remembrance and show every family that they are not alone.

Thank you for your kindness and action.

Sincerely,
Beverley Williams
