The Issue

This petition is born out of a deeply personal concern. My 96-year-old father, like many pensioners, has spent his life contributing to society through work and contributions. He, along with countless others, has been part of company pension schemes or contributed to personal schemes during their working years. Their aim was simple - to supplement the state pension and secure a comfortable retirement.

However, the reality is far from this vision. The state pension is woefully inadequate and somewhat insulting considering the years of hard work these individuals have put in. It's disheartening that my father now worries about his taxed pension income in his golden years.

The current tax threshold for pensioners living solely on their pensions does not reflect the cost of living today. This needs change urgently! We call upon our government to raise this tax threshold up to the living wage amount allowing our respected elders to keep more of their income.

Furthermore, we urge an increase in the state pension up to at least the living wage amount as well. According to Age UK (2019), nearly 2 million older people are struggling financially with over a million considered poor by official standards due largely in part because they do not receive enough money from pensions.

Our elderly deserve better than financial stress after a lifetime of contribution! Let's give them dignity and security they deserve by ensuring they can keep all their hard-earned pensions no matter where it originates from!

Please sign this petition urging an increase in both tax thresholds for pensions and state pensions themselves!
