Increase Student Loan Interest Deduction Amount
The Issue
The problem is that while ALL student loan borrowers are experiencing economic stress, only those with loans serviced by the Department of Education are getting relief. Where I am pleased with the effort being made, there is still so much this administration can do.
I am petitioning to create a solution that would benefit all student loan borrowers. My proposal is to remove the limit on the amount of student loan interest that can be deducted on tax returns. The current limit is only $2500. I petition that the total of interest paid be deductible - even if it is more than $2500.
I also propose that the income threshold be increased allowing more borrowers to be eligible for the deduction. Currently, individual taxpayers making $85K or more (or married couples making $175K or more) are completely excluded. Increasing the income threshold to at least $125K per individual would be a good start.
