I recount with horror the night I was driving down old Highway 53 in Clearlake and due to the intense darkness I almost hit a pedestrian. This is a fate many drivers live with since most locals, especially our homeless population, wear black, making it almost impossible to spot them in our poorly-lit streets.

Clearlake has an intolerable lack of sufficient street lighting, which puts both drivers and pedestrians at risk. This hazard is so prominent that it should concern all citizens. Unfortunately, several people have been hit by vehicles as a result of poor visibility due to insufficient lighting.

Recent studies suggest that better street lighting can reduce night-time accidents by up to 30% (IIHS, 2019). Improved lighting will not only enhance safety but also the quality of life for all residents. It is about time we pay attention to the safety of our community members, who deserve to walk and drive in peace, without fear for their lives.

We appeal to the Clearlake City Council to add more street lights, particularly along Highway 53 and other high-risk areas. Each additional street light will make a significant difference, potentially saving a life. Stand with us in making Clearlake safer for everyone at night.
