Increase SNAP benefits for the elderly and disabled in Texas

Increase SNAP benefits for the elderly and disabled in Texas
The Issue
Working as a State of Texas employee with the elderly and disabled, I witness firsthand the heartbreaking struggles these individuals face. It is disheartening to see how little Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits they receive despite having contributed so much to society. Many of the elderly are unable to work due to age or medical conditions that necessitate special diets, yet they find themselves grappling with insufficient nutritional aid.
These individuals have dedicated their lives to working hard, providing for their families without reliance on assistance programs. They deserve respect and adequate support now when they can no longer fend for themselves. Most haven’t benefited from assistance in sourcing food or healthcare during their prime, and now, their needs are greater than ever, especially with rising healthcare costs and food prices.
In contrast, many from the younger generation who are capable of working receive SNAP benefits, raising concerns about the fairness and allocation of resources. We propose a reassessment of SNAP allocation where the elderly and disabled individuals are prioritized. There should be a finite timeframe for the younger recipients, encouraging integration back into the workforce, whereas the elderly should have ensured ongoing support without limitations.
According to a 2021 report from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 14.5% of Texas's population is aged 65 and above, depicting a growing urgency to address their needs. Furthermore, a study from the Texas Health and Human Services highlights that a significant portion of this demographic lives below the poverty line.
We urge the State of Texas and relevant authorities to re-evaluate the SNAP benefit structure, increasing the benefits for the elderly and disabled and ensuring they receive the sustenance required for a dignified life. This change will not only acknowledge their lifelong contributions but also set a precedent for compassionate governance.
Sign this petition to support the fair treatment and assistance for our elderly and disabled population in Texas. Let us stand together and demand what's right for those who have given us so much.
