The Issue

We, the residents and community members of East Chicago, Indiana, are urgently requesting increased measures to combat the alarming rise in vehicle break-ins. This unsettling pattern of crime has primarily victimized our neighborhoods during the early morning hours, specifically between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. These incidents are not isolated; the consistent methods and timing suggest a possible pattern or repeat offender, leaving our community in a state of distress. For many of us, these break-ins have meant significant financial losses, stolen property, and a lingering sense of fear and anxiety. Every day, countless residents wake up to a shattered window or a ransacked car, catalytic converter stolen, an unsettling and often expensive ordeal that has become all too common. Beyond monetary losses, these incidents have eroded the sense of safety and peace within our community. We believe that installing additional mobile security cameras in high-traffic, vulnerable areas can serve as a viable deterrent and a powerful tool in identifying and prosecuting offenders. Mobile cameras have the flexibility to be positioned in strategic locations tailored to combat the escalation of these crimes, thus providing a significant boost to our existing law enforcement efforts. Moreover, increased camera surveillance not only aids in the apprehension of perpetrators but also serves as a promise of security to our community members. This initiative can invite an era of heightened vigilance, ensuring our streets are monitored and safer for all residents. We urge local government officials, including Mayor Anthony Copeland and the City Council, to prioritize funding and resources for this essential security upgrade. By investing in mobile security cameras, the city can take decisive action to restore a sense of safety and instill confidence in its residents. Please join us in this urgent call for a safer East Chicago by signing this petition. Together, we can advocate for a proactive solution that addresses our community’s concerns and champions the well-being of every resident.
