Increase Security and Assert Victim Compensation in LA Public Transportation

Increase Security and Assert Victim Compensation in LA Public Transportation

The Issue

I, like many other L.A. natives, grew up relying heavily on the city's public transportation system. Whether to travel to school, work, or simply around the city, it played a crucial part in my life. However, my experiences always led me to be weary of my surroundings  due to the presence of disturbers, often under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Such experiences have not only instilled an uneasy atmosphere but have also highlighted the glaring lack of sufficient security measures in place. This lack jeopardizes the well-being of all who use the city's buses, subways, and other means of public transportation.

It's time our city reconsiders its approach to public transit safety. In 2019, the Los Angeles Police Department reported more than 2900 incidents on the Metro, proving this is not an isolated problem (source: Los Angeles Times). We implore city officials to impose stricter security enforcement across all public transit systems to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Moreover, recognizing that instances of unrest may occur regardless, it's essential the city of Los Angeles establishes a comprehensive victim compensation policy. This policy should aim to aid those who encounter harmful situations while using public transport, providing them the necessary support.
