Every time I send my kids off to school, there's an unshakeable worry in the back of my mind. I fear receiving a dreaded phone call or hearing of another heartbreaking statistic. Our schools should be sanctuaries of learning and growth, free from the anxieties of potential threats. Yet, the rising concerns over school safety have rendered these spaces uncertain.

In recent years, there have been numerous instances across the nation highlighting the inadequacies of current safety protocols in our educational institutions. Just last year, there were over 130 school shootings in the United States, a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities in our schools. Morgan County is not immune to these threats, and it's our responsibility to act proactively to ensure the security of our children.

There are practical and effective measures we can implement to address these concerns. Increased funding for security personnel, such as trained resource officers, is crucial. Additionally, investing in advanced technologies—like surveillance cameras and secure entry systems—can act as both a deterrent and a protective filter for potential threats.

Moreover, by enhancing mental health support services within our schools, we can address issues before they escalate to the point of crisis. Schools should foster environments where students feel safe to express their concerns and access help. This can drastically reduce incidents and improve the overall school climate.

Our children's safety in Morgan County can't be left to chance. It's time for our educational leaders and local government to prioritize and allocate resources towards making our schools safer places. Implementing these changes requires community support and the commitment of our local officials.
