Increase Recess Time in Arizona Schools

Increase Recess Time in Arizona Schools
The Issue
We are calling for a change in Arizona law to require two 30-minute, unstructured, screen-free recess periods—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—for all elementary school students, and at least one 30-minute recess period for middle school students. This change is crucial to the health, well-being, and academic success of our children. Currently our law requires two recess periods per day but does not specify the amount of time a school should enact. We are advocating for specified blocks of time in the total amount of 60 minutes to optimize the benefits of outdoor play. Several credible organizations recommends at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for kids, including Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and National Association for Sport and Physical Education. Studies confirmed that 60 minutes of unstructured play significantly contributes to their physical and emotional well-being.
In recent years, many Arizona public schools have reduced or even eliminated recess time for students, citing reasons such as academic pressures and budget constraints. However, evidence shows that recess is not just playtime; it is an essential component of a child's development, offering immense benefits that contribute to their physical and emotional well-being.
Recess is the time when students can engage in unstructured play, social interaction, and physical activity, all of which are critical for healthy growth. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, recess helps improve a child's attention span, behavior, and overall academic performance. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that children require at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, which can be significantly supported by school recess.
Eliminating recess robs children of these opportunities, particularly in Arizona, where nearly 25% of children are classified as obese, according to a 2020 report from the Trust for America's Health. Further, studies have shown that regular physical activity is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases, better mental health, and improved mood and energy levels.
We understand the challenges that schools face, including tight budgets and packed academic schedules. However, eliminating or reducing recess is not the solution. Schools can look to other states that have integrated academic learning with physical activity, thereby ensuring that students receive a holistic education that addresses both mind and body.
We urge the Arizona Department of Education, school boards, and policymakers to prioritize children's health and learning by restoring daily recess in all public schools across the state. By doing so, we will not only foster a healthier, more productive generation but also affirm our commitment to nurturing the well-being of our students.
Please sign this petition to demand the restoration of recess in all Arizona public schools. Let's work together to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive physically, emotionally, and academically.
