The Issue

Bullying, in all its forms, has serious effects on the social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of the people it affects. Research by the National Center for Educational Statistics (2019) shows that about 20% of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied at school during the school year. Additionally, the Cyberbullying Research Center reported in 2020 that nearly 37% of students had experienced cyberbullying in their lifetime. What makes these statistics even more troubling is that most bullying incidents go unreported. Harsher penalties for bullying could deter potential bullies, making both physical and online environments safer for all.

We propose that schools, institutions, and law enforcement agencies adopt stricter punishments for those found guilty of bullying and cyberbullying. These may include compulsory counseling, disciplinary actions in schools, and in severe cases, legal penalties. We ask for fundamental changes in our laws and school policies to create an environment that no longer tolerates harmful bullying behavior.
