The Issue

Every school day in Cambridge, MA, middle school students are expected to focus, learn, and thrive academically. However, for many, this expectation becomes a significant challenge due to inadequate nutrition. It’s hard to concentrate on lessons and participate in classroom activities with an empty stomach.

At present, middle school students are receiving only 6 ounces of protein in their daily lunches, whereas experts recommend about 10 ounces for growing adolescents to help maintain energy levels, support cognitive functions, and promote overall well-being. This gap in nutritional requirements is not trivial. Numerous studies indicate that a well-balanced diet, rich in protein, is crucial for brain development and learning outcomes in children.

For instance, a study by the National Institutes of Health underscores the importance of adequate protein intake for children's academic performance and mood stability. Deficiencies in nutrition can lead to decreased concentration, higher rates of absenteeism, and even behavioral issues in schools.

We urge the Cambridge School District to follow the guidelines proposed by nutritionists and increase protein portions in school lunches from 6 to 10 ounces. By doing so, schools can better meet the dietary needs of students, supporting their physical growth and academic success.

Implementing this change is a small yet impactful step towards ensuring all children have equal opportunities to succeed academically. It’s time we addressed this issue and aligned our nutrition standards with scientific recommendations.

Sign this petition to help us bring this necessary change to the Cambridge middle school meal programs. Every signature will move us closer to healthier lunches and a brighter academic future for our children.
