Increase prison sentences for dangerous driving fatalities

Increase prison sentences for dangerous driving fatalities
The Issue
My husband, Maciej, was tragically killed, aged only 40, by a man rushing to work, leaving our family shattered. He was riding his motorbike to work, obeying all the rules, when suddenly he was hit by the car that was overtaking a lorry on a double line and in a hidden dip in the road. He died instantaneously as a result of a head-on collision, the driver who caused the collision did not have a scratch. Our daughter, at only 6, and our son, who was just 4 at the time, lost their father. The dangerous driver's careless decision cost us a husband, a father, a centerpiece of our family – yet he only received a 36-month sentence, of which just 18 months will be served in prison. To us, this is not justice; it is merely a slap on the wrist for a life taken too soon. For killing someone this way, sentences of 10 years of imprisonment and longer would be much more appropriate.
The moment two uniformed police officers knocked on my door will stay in my mind forever. The worst moment of my life. They did not have to say anything, I just knew something terrible had happened. That day our world shatered into a million pieces. All our plans and dreams gone, my children's childhood heavily stained. Maciej was an incredible selfless man, a loving husband and father, skilled IT technical engineer, very capable at DIY, an inventor, volunteer fire fighter, a carpenter and a frequent blood donor. He also wanted to donate all his organs upon his death but because of the nature of his death, head on collision, that was impossible. The impact of one careless decision is beyond words. Why doesn't the law reflect the impact dangerous driving has upon bereaved families? My kids still cry at night, missing Daddy. They still talk about him in the present tense, unable to fully comprehend our immense loss. My son wants to build a tree house with his Daddy, this dream of his is never going to come true.
This tragedy isn’t just personal. It reflects a systemic failure to treat deaths caused by dangerous driving with the gravity they deserve. Current sentencing does not reflect the horrendous impact on families like ours. More than 20% of road deaths in our country are caused by reckless or dangerous driving. Those found guilty often receive sentences that are not proportionate to the crime, essentially equating innocent lives to mere collateral damage.
We can and must do better. Increasing prison sentences for dangerous driving fatalities to reflect their severity is a tangible step. By treating these cases as manslaughter, we ensure accountability and reflect the magnitude of losing a life, pushing for change that could save others.
Let’s urge our legal system to revisit and reform these laws, acknowledging the weight of these heinous acts. This is about justice for those we've lost and about preventing future tragedies.
Sign this petition to champion justice, to prevent other families from enduring unbearable loss, and to push for a legal system that truly values lives lost at the hands of dangerous drivers.
