Increase policing for the safety of Westfield State University area
Increase policing for the safety of Westfield State University area
The Issue
An image no one would want to see again in a highly congested area where our kids ride their bikes, people walk their dogs, parents push their baby strollers and students walk back to their dorms at night.
One evening, my wife was nearly struck at a flashing crosswalk by a driver who was texting, completely unaware of her presence as she was halfway through the crosswalk. Living near Westfield State University and Stanley Park, close calls like these are not uncommon, as numerous children on bikes and pedestrians frequent this area daily. Our neighborhood has come together with growing concern as parents and residents continuously voice their unease about the safety of our streets.
The problem is clear and alarming: Western Ave., which runs through the heart of our community near the university and park, is plagued by a significant number of accidents, primarily due to speeding vehicles. The lack of apparent speed traps and policing during critical hours—early mornings and evenings—exacerbates the danger for everyone. Without sufficient enforcement and deterrents, drivers feel free to ignore traffic rules, putting lives at risk.
It's imperative that the city of Westfield takes immediate action to provide adequate policing and implement necessary safety measures. Introducing regular speed patrols, traffic calming devices such as speed humps, and improving pedestrian crosswalk signals can make an immediate impact.
Moreover, ensuring the sidewalks and crosswalks are safe and promoting a culture of responsible driving is vital for the wellbeing of our community, especially with so many children, students, and elderly residents at risk.
We urge the city of Westfield to address this critical issue promptly by committing to increased police presence, particularly during the busy hours on Western Ave. Your support by signing this petition can lead to swift action and help transform our neighborhood into a safer place for everyone. Let's work together to protect the lives of our loved ones and enhance the quality of life in our community. Please sign and share our petition today to make a difference.
