Increase or Remove the $2000 Liquid Asset Limit for Disabled Individuals

The Issue

Thousands of people with disabilities are presently bound by a limiting regulation that renders them ineligible to maintain basic assets over $2000 and simultaneously receive disability benefits and healthcare coverage. This limitation on liquid assets dates back to 1984, an era when $2000 held significantly more economic value than it does today. Yet, the constraint has not been amended for inflation or the rising cost of living.

This restriction significantly hinders disabled persons' capacity to prepare for emergencies and limit their ability to independently ameliorate their living conditions. Additionally, the fear of unintentionally overshooting this asset limit and losing essential assistance curbs their pursuit towards a more productive and self-reliant life.

In the face of a crisis or unexpected costs, $2000 is no longer sufficient. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average monthly expenditure for an American household in 2019 was approximately $5,102. This starkly highlights the inadequacy of the current asset limit.

To combat this outdated regulation, which has ultimately turned into a penalizing asset trap for the disabled, we request the timely increase or removal of this $2000 liquid asset limit. It will provide individuals with disabilities the financial flexibility they need, promote their autonomy, and encourage their reintegration back into a productive society. Thereby creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
