Increase number of spots allotted to students in undergraduate courses at UCSB!

The Issue

Students who attend the University of California, Santa Barbara struggle every quarter during their pass times (scheduled times to enroll in courses) because the courses they are required to take have very limited availability. This causes students to either turn to other resources to make up for the lack of space or wait until the next time the class is offered in order to complete a class that is mandatory for graduating with their designated degree. Having space in required courses should be a basic requirement in all universities, especially UCSB which receives mass amounts of private and public funding ($257.6 million in 2023). Papers were released admitting that 42% of courses at UCSB are over 95% capacity, which does not align with the values of the campus' class regime it claims to provide for its students.

If more spaces do not become available, students are at risk of not fulfilling their "Minimum Cumulative Progress requirements" which would endanger the students in making timely progress toward the completion of their degree. Increasing the number of spaces would have to also increase the number of staff for courses to uphold the standard UC student-to-faculty ratio that the UC system is prized over. This issue causes stress in a large majority of UCSB's students as graduating in their desired time frame is not just a 'want' but a basic accommodation the school should be able to provide.

Please sign this petition, as we must take immediate action to increase the number of spots in undergraduate courses and help those students at UCSB who are struggling.
