Increase New York State Speed Limits and Enforce Slow Traffic Laws

The Issue

The current speed limits in New York State do not reflect the natural flow of traffic, often leading to congestion, dangerous lane switching, and road rage. Many drivers naturally travel at speeds of 65 to 70 mph, making the current speed limit outdated and inefficient. Furthermore, the law stating slower traffic should move to the left is rarely enforced. This lack of enforcement contributes significantly to unnecessary traffic jams and increases stress levels among drivers. According to a study by Wallethub (2018), New York ranks as one of the states with the worst traffic congestion in America. By increasing speed limits to match actual driving habits and enforcing existing laws for slower-moving vehicles, we can improve overall traffic flow, reduce potential road hazards, and decrease driver frustration on our roads. We urge lawmakers in New York State to take these issues into consideration for a safer driving environment for all residents. Please sign this petition if you agree that these changes need to be implemented and send emails to your local representatives to put pressure on the government.
