Increase milk prices for Vermont dairy farmers and reduce farmland taxes

Increase milk prices for Vermont dairy farmers and reduce farmland taxes
The Issue
Growing up on dairy farms in Vermont, I've witnessed firsthand the struggles many farmers face. Over the years, I’ve seen prices for essential farming resources skyrocket, while the price of milk has remained stagnant since the 1980s. The result? Many of the original dairy farms that were once the backbone of our communities have closed their doors forever. It's heart-wrenching to watch a vital part of Vermont's heritage crumble due to circumstances beyond the control of the hardworking farmers.
Dairy farming has been an integral part of Vermont's economy and culture for generations. It not only contributes to the state's vibrant rural communities but also plays a significant role in preserving our pastoral landscapes. However, our dairy farmers are at a breaking point. According to the USDA, the cost of living and production has significantly increased over the past decades, making it nearly impossible for smaller farms to survive.
To ensure the future of dairy farming in Vermont, we must take immediate action to raise milk prices and lower taxes on farmland. By adjusting milk prices to reflect the current economic realities, we can provide sustainable income for farmers. Furthermore, reducing taxes on farmland would alleviate financial burdens, enabling farms to reinvest in their operations, retain employees, and upgrade necessary equipment.
According to a 2021 report by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, dairy accounts for more than 70% of the state's agricultural sales, yet many farms operate on razor-thin margins. A modest increase in milk prices could significantly enhance the economic viability of these farms. Similarly, studies show that tax incentives could revitalize agricultural communities by making farming more financially attractive.
We urge policymakers and community leaders to prioritize the future of our dairy farms and implement these changes. This is not just about preserving the past; it’s about ensuring a thriving agricultural future for Vermont, its economy, and its people.
Please sign this petition to support our hardworking Vermont dairy farmers and to help maintain the agricultural landscape that is so intrinsic to our state's identity. Together, we can make a difference in securing a sustainable and prosperous future for our beloved dairy farms.
