Increase Mental Health Resources for Teens in Illinois
The Issue
From my personal experience, and the struggle with mental health challenges, I've come to understand the impacts of limited resources for mental health. Mental health issues, particularly among teens, in Illinois and across the nation are reaching worrisome levels.
Over the years, suicide rates have dramatically increased. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15 to 34-year-olds in Illinois. This is not just a statistic for me – it is a daily reality and a constant reminder that we need more resources.
Our state is in desperate need of a comprehensive, accessible support system for teens struggling with mental health issues. Having adequate resources in place means that individuals can get the help they need before reaching crisis point. Early intervention can save lives, but it requires an investment in mental health that we're not currently seeing in Illinois.
We need to take steps to increase the availability of mental health resources in our schools and communities. This means more funding for therapists, counseling services and programs dedicated to mental health education and prevention.
I urge lawmakers in our state to recognize the importance of investing in our future generation's mental health. More resources can - and will - make a difference. They will give help to those who need it the most, perhaps even saving their lives.
