The Issue

At the age of 23, the world I knew came crashing down around me. I was thrilled to be expecting two beautiful identical twin boys, but I was unaware of the peril that lay ahead. At this crucial moment in my pregnancy, at just 23 weeks my sons were diagnosed with Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a rare and devastating condition that affects identical twins sharing the same placenta. Due to TTTS, my boys arrived much earlier than anticipated, and the dreams I held dear for their futures faded away within a span of just a few days.

The loss of my babies has not only left an indelible scar on my heart but also ignited a passionate drive to prevent others from enduring similar heartbreak. TTTS is a condition that, although rare, requires urgent attention and adequate medical research. Current protocols and research investments do not reflect the severity or urgency with which TTTS should be treated. Not only does this condition threaten the lives of unborn children, but it also wreaks havoc on families who are emotionally unprepared for the rapid developments brought by this syndrome.

According to the TTTS Foundation, the condition affects approximately 10-15% of monochorionic-diamniotic (MCDA) twins, and when left untreated, it bears a grim survival rate which can dip as low as 10%. With statistics like these, it's evident that TTTS needs greater attention in the medical community. Essential funding and attention should be directed towards more exhaustive research and clinical trials focused on TTTS. Enhanced diagnostic tools and standardized treatment protocols could significantly reduce mortality rates and the emotional trauma families undergo.

I urge policymakers and health authorities to prioritize research funding into TTTS and related medical investigations. Let's become advocates for those sweet voices that never got a chance, and for families that wish to fulfill their dream of welcoming healthy twins into their lives. With greater research, we can transform the bleak outlook attached to TTTS into a hopeful, manageable condition.

Please help me by signing this petition to call for increased focus and funding for medical investigations on Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Your support can illuminate the path towards rigorous research and development, striving for a future where the narrative changes from despair to hope for expecting parents of MCDA twins.
