In September 2023, a beloved family member was tragically taken from us. My uncle, an innocent victim, was murdered with a single punch. This devastating event has highlighted the need for change in our justice system. Currently, the average sentence for manslaughter in many jurisdictions is far less than life imprisonment. This leniency often fails to deliver justice for victims and their families.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the median time served by manslaughter offenders in UK prisons is just 5 years (Bureau of Justice Statistics). This stark figure underscores how current sentencing guidelines can fail to adequately punish those who commit such serious crimes and deter potential offenders.

We believe that increasing sentences for manslaughter to a minimum of life imprisonment will send a clear message about society's intolerance towards such violent acts. It will also provide some measure of solace to grieving families knowing that justice has been served.

We call on lawmakers and judicial authorities to reconsider current sentencing guidelines for manslaughter offences and increase them significantly - up until life imprisonment if necessary - so that they reflect the gravity of these crimes.
