The Issue

My name is Gabriella Misuraca, and I am an 8th grade student at Pentucket Regional Middle School. For my Civics Project this year, I am starting a petition to advocate for increased local and state funding for first responders and veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Every day, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and military veterans put their lives and mental well-being on the line to protect and serve others. Unfortunately, many of these individuals experience lasting emotional and psychological trauma as a result of the difficult situations they encounter throughout their careers and service. This cause is especially important to me because I have many family members who, due to their line of work and service, have personally experienced PTSD. Seeing the impact it can have on individuals and families has shown me that more needs to be done to help them live healthy and safe lives after spending so much of their own lives fighting for and protecting us.

PTSD can develop after a single traumatic event, such as combat during war, responding to a devastating accident, or witnessing violence and loss. In many cases, PTSD is also cumulative, meaning repeated exposure to traumatic experiences over time can build and eventually trigger severe emotional distress. First responders and veterans often carry the weight of these experiences silently while continuing to serve their communities and country. Without proper support systems, counseling resources, and access to mental health treatment, many individuals struggle to cope with the long-term effects of trauma. Many people suffering from PTSD may feel isolated, misunderstood, or unsupported, making it even more important for communities and government leaders to recognize the seriousness of this issue.

Through this petition, I hope to raise awareness about the importance of mental health support for those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Increased funding could provide better access to counseling services, PTSD treatment programs, peer support groups, crisis intervention resources, and community outreach programs specifically designed for first responders and veterans. By supporting this cause, we can help ensure that the people who protect our communities receive the care, understanding, and support they deserve. These brave men and women have spent their lives serving others, and it is our responsibility to stand behind them and make sure they receive the help they need in return.
