Increase Law Enforcement Presence in Durham, CT to Curb Reckless Driving and Littering

The Issue

As residents of a picturesque town located on a 30mph backroad in Durham, CT, we are increasingly concerned about reckless driving and littering that is spoiling the beauty and tranquility of our town. Cars are frequently speeding at over 70 mph, showing disregard for residents, pets, and pedestrians—including those walking with their babies—an alarming issue not limited to our street but prevalent across town.

Despite having a dedicated resident trooper, law enforcement appears inadequate to address this growing menace. Considering that about 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, an average of 3,287 deaths a day, the lack of respect for the speed limit in our town is an issue of public safety we cannot overlook [source: Association for Safe International Road Travel].

Aside from dangerous driving, our town is being marred by unpleasant litter, another emblem of disregard for the well-being of our community and the preservation of the environment. Keep America Beautiful estimates that there are 51 billion pieces of litter on roadways in the United States, the vast majority of which result directly from irresponsible motorists [source: Keep America Beautiful].

We are pleading with authorities to increase law enforcement presence in our town. Only with more officers on watch can we hope to curb these issues effectively, ensuring safer roads and a cleaner environment. We must prioritize our own safety, as well as the serenity and cleanliness of our town. We urge Durham's responsible authorities to take immediate action to address these grievances and restore the peace. Please sign this petition to support this cause.
