The issue

I was abused by someone I met on a dating app. He had 35 charges of domestic violence breaches, two of grievous bodily harm with intent, and two stalking charge. I am one of three women who have been abused by him. He only received four years in prison and is now out on parole. I live in constant fear for my life, knowing he will  come for me. Even while he was incarcerated, he sent people to attack me from prison.

This terrifying experience highlights a critical flaw in our justice system. Individuals with extensive histories of violence towards others, like my abuser, are receiving sentences that do not reflect the severity of their actions. Despite the clear danger they pose, inadequate jail time is granted, allowing them to re-enter society and continue their patterns of abuse.

According to the World Health Organization, one in three women across the globe experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Most of this violence is intimate partner violence like what I've faced. Yet, the justice system often fails to provide sufficient protection or justice for these victims.

For the safety and well-being of current and potential victims, it is crucial that harsher penalties are enforced. Increasing jail time for domestic violence and rape could act as both a deterrent to potential offenders and a means of protecting victims from further harm. By keeping these criminals behind bars longer, we allow victims to regain control over their lives and live without fear of repeat attacks.

We urge legislators and judicial officials to reevaluate current sentencing guidelines and work towards a more just legal system. Implementing longer sentences for these heinous crimes is not only a matter of justice but also of public safety.

Stand with us in demanding change. Sign this petition to call for a reassessment of sentencing laws for domestic violence and rape offenders, ensuring they receive the punishment they deserve and victims receive the protection they need.
