Increase In Concussion Protocols at the High School Level

The Issue

Significant numbers of athletes leave their head injuries unreported for multiple reasons. Lindsey Straus cites studies from Harvard Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital regarding this issue and writes, “Of the players who did not report their concussion, the most common reasons cited were ‘didn’t want to be pulled from competition’ (47.7%) and ‘feeling it wasn’t a serious injury’ (56.9%).” Another staggering statistic comes from Michael McCarthy’s study. It states, “Most teams failed to report all of their players’ concussions, the reporters wrote, and, overall, at least 10% of head injuries diagnosed by team doctors were not included in the studies” (1). These statistics contribute to displaying the numerous flaws in the concussion protocol along with in a way showing the lack of knowledge the athletes possess on the effects and risks of concussions, especially continuing to play after experiencing a significant or repeated head collision. This issue can be resolved if the program does a better job of informing the athletes of the risks of concussions so they are more likely to seek medical attention regarding concussions along with the NFL and all levels doing a more accurate job of recording the data. With your help by signing this petition we can begin to take action at the high school level and moving up to the collegiate and professional levels as well.
