Mosman, NSW, is renowned for its abundant greenery and lush landscapes. This natural beauty, however, comes with a significant amount of green waste generated by residents.
Unfortunately, Mosman Council currently collects green waste only once a month, a frequency that is insufficient for the needs of the community. Most councils across greater Sydney have theirs collected fortnightly, or even weekly.
Green waste, including garden clippings, branches, leaves, and grass, accumulates quickly, especially in a neighborhood where maintaining green spaces is highly enforced and valued. I am yet to find another council with such infrequent collections.
Whilst Mosman Council does have the option to buy additional green bins, the storage of these is often impractical. There is also a program for composting, which is not suitable for everyone who doesn't want to attract rodents to their property.
Moreover, the inclusion of FOGU (Food Organics and Garden Organics) in the green waste bins could drastically improve waste management in Mosman. Many other councils in Greater Sydney have already adopted more frequent green waste collection schedules—either weekly or fortnightly—to accommodate the average household’s needs effectively. They demonstrate that such systems are feasible and beneficial.
Mosman residents deserve equal services that meet their lifestyle and environmental commitments. By increasing the frequency of green waste collection to at least fortnightly, and by hopefully including FOGU in our green bins, Mosman can meet the standard set by other LGAs in Sydney.
Sign this petition to urge the Mosman Council to increase the frequency of our green bin collections in 2026, and to seriously consider introducing the FOGU system as well.
Update/Note: all NSW councils will be required to introduce FOGO by 2030, which requires weekly green waste collection.
