America is failing mothers, especially those in rural areas, and it’s time to face the facts. While the Lindsay Clancy case has sparked national conversations about postpartum care, there's a critical issue flying under the radar: the closure of labor and delivery units in rural hospitals.

Alarmingly, only 41% of rural hospitals in the United States still have these essential facilities. This is often attributed to the so-called "financial viability" related to declining birth rates. 

Women in these communities now face the daunting prospect of traveling hours to reach the nearest hospital equipped to offer the basic level of care necessary for childbirth. This is a clear message from our country: that mothers' needs, their bodies, and their peace of mind are merely collateral damage in the pursuit of profit. How can we stand by while this critical aspect of healthcare fades away, leaving the most vulnerable mothers without support?

The government must increase funding to keep labor and delivery units open in rural hospitals. Such funding could alleviate the financial strain these hospitals face and ensure that every woman has access to safe delivery options. This isn't just about keeping facilities open; it's about honoring our commitment to mothers, ensuring they receive adequate care both during and after childbirth.

It’s crucial that we show care for our mothers, that we provide safe places for childbirth, and that we don't abandon them after delivery.
