The Issue

My husband is a police officer, and so is my best friend for the City and County of Denver. Through them, I have witnessed firsthand the dedication and bravery that law enforcement officers exhibit every single day. They often sacrifice their own safety to protect our communities and keep law and order. Unfortunately, the negative headlines often overshadow the invaluable and mostly unseen work they do to ensure our streets are safe. Not all officers are "bad apples," and their contributions deserve recognition and support.

Police officers, like my husband and best friend, face an increasing number of challenges each day. Rising crime rates, budget cuts, and a lack of resources are just a few of the hurdles they navigate regularly. Insufficient funding hampers their ability to operate effectively and safely. Police departments need up-to-date equipment, comprehensive training programs, and enough personnel to respond swiftly and efficiently to emergencies.

For example, with better adequate funding, officers can be trained more efficiently. Medical needs can be utilized on many calls that officers respond to. Being better prepared can result in better outcomes, better trust built with the community and overall increased safety. According to Rogers, et al (2019), “Much research has shown an improvement in attitudes and a reduction of stigma in police officers who received mental health training. There is good evidence for benefit in officer-level outcomes, such as officer satisfaction and self-perception of a reduction in the use of force.”

In many regions, budget constraints have led to reduced officer numbers, forcing remaining personnel to handle enormous workloads. This not only endangers their well-being but also compromises public safety. By increasing funding for police departments, we can ensure they are fully equipped to perform their duties effectively.

Providing adequate resources for police officers will enhance their ability to engage in community policing, forge strong community ties, and serve as positive role models. Increased funding will allow for better training in de-escalation techniques, reducing the likelihood of unfortunate incidents. “The President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing recommended de-escalation be a central part of every agency's use of force training and policy,” (White et al., 2023). It will also enable departments to offer mental health resources for officers, addressing the psychological toll of their demanding jobs.

Let’s acknowledge the vital role police officers play in maintaining public safety. By supporting them, we support safer communities. I urge you to join me in calling for increased funding for police departments nationwide. Your signature could make a real difference in pushing for the resources our law enforcement officers desperately need.
