The Issue

Montanans' main priority is conservation, and witnessing a Sherp vehicle tread down the Blackfoot River was devastating to many of us. It's a place where we connect with nature, enjoy its serene beauty, and cherish the efforts made to preserve it for future generations. Seeing such blatant disregard for this treasured site strikes deeply in our hearts, especially when faced with a paltry $500 fine as punishment.

The Blackfoot River is not just water; it's part of our identity. It's about fish habitats, pristine water quality, biodiversity, and the overall ecosystem that also supports local economies and recreational activities. Allowing such low penalties for actions that jeopardize this fragile environment disrespects every effort made towards its conservation.

In 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis highlighted the outdoor recreation industry contributed $887 billion to the U.S. economy, emphasizing how crucial our rivers and natural landscapes are. Yet, something more than money is at stake—it's our natural heritage.

Neighboring states have enacted much harsher penalties to protect their rivers from harm. Why should we settle for less? It's time for the authorities to instate fines proportionate to the ecological risk and damage caused by such acts.

We call on local lawmakers and environmental agencies to address this discrepancy. Raise the fine for unauthorized vehicle driving through our cherished river beds to much harsher fines. Elevating these fines will not only reflect the severity of the action but also act as a deterrent to future offenders.

We can't wait until it's too late to guard our natural gems. Support our cause and secure the conservation of the Blackfoot River for current and future Montanans. Join us by signing this petition to demand more significant, meaningful penalties that align with our community’s conservation values.
