The Issue

New Castle, NY, has been my home for over 24 years, a place where I have passionately led 'A Good Dog Rescue,' striving to give shelter animals a chance at a better life. Recently, I found myself in a distressing legal battle due to a false complaint lodged against me by individuals attempting to undermine my rescue efforts. Despite being on 3 acres of land in a zone requiring a minimum of 2 acres per home, I have been informed by the animal warden and town authorities that fostering even one additional dog is not permissible under current local regulations.

This heartbreaking reality goes beyond personal inconvenience. New Castle's limitation of 3 dogs per household is outdated and unnecessarily restrictive, especially when neighboring towns like Ridgefield, CT, allow up to 6 dogs and Plattekill, NY, allows 5. Increasing the limit in New Castle would not only align us with regional standards but could significantly reduce the number of dogs euthanized in shelters annually. Each year, millions of dogs face this tragic fate simply because they lack a home.

Moreover, by allowing more families to adopt additional dogs, the town could benefit financially. More dogs mean more revenue from licensing fees, which could be invested back into community services or used to improve local animal shelters.

With adequate space and resources, many residents in New Castle are more than capable of providing loving homes to more than the current limit of three dogs. Modernizing our pet ownership regulations is a necessary step for both animal welfare and community advancement.

Please join me in urging the town council of New Castle to reconsider and increase the dog ownership limit. By signing this petition, you are supporting a humane, beneficial change that reflects our community's capacity and compassion. Let's work together to provide more dogs with the lifelong care and loving homes they deserve. Sign today and help us make a difference for countless dogs in need.
