Increase Counseling Services for Students at Illinois State University

Increase Counseling Services for Students at Illinois State University

The Issue

As a social work major at Illinois State University (ISU), I am deeply concerned about the shortage of counseling services available for students on campus. It is presently challenging to secure an appointment with a counselor at ISU due to the limited spots available. The process often involves checking back week after week, hoping to find an available slot-- a circumstance that discourages many from seeking help.

Mental health is an essential component of a student's life, affecting every aspect of their academic performance and overall wellness. According to the American College Health Association survey in 2019, over 60 percent of college students reported experiencing overwhelming anxiety, and more than 40 percent said they felt so depressed it was difficult to function. Being a student is difficult. Having access to counseling services on campus shouldn't be.

We must demand more from our academic institutions, especially when it comes to supporting student mental health. Join us in urging Illinois State University to increase the number of counselors and appointments available for students to ensure everyone has access to the support they need.
