As a parent in Toronto, reliable after school care is a necessity with employers embracing the return to office mandate.  The After School Recreation Program at Adam Beck Community Centre, located next to Adam Beck Junior Public School, plays a crucial role in providing children with a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment after classes end.  However, the current capacity of this program is insufficient to meet the growing demand from families in our area, including those associated with Adam Beck and Kimberley Junior / Beaches Alternative Public Schools.

The need for an expanded program is evident.  The capacity of 70 students was filled up immediately within the first few minutes of registration on June 5, 2026 leaving many families facing uncertainty with respect to childcare commitments for the upcoming fall and winter term.  In many cases, parents will need to choose between work and childcare, leaving fewer options and capacity to  optimize activities and extracirriculars for our children.  Furthermore, as stated, with the return to office mandate, this will put additional pressures of families to choose between childcare and a paycheque.  We are calling on the City of Toronto and the Adam Beck Junior Public School administration to collaborate in expanding the After School Recreation Program's capacity by opening classrooms adjoining the Community Centre to expand after school childcare services.

By prioritizing this much-needed expansion, the City of Toronto and Adam Beck Junior Public School have an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to community development, education, and the well-being of our children.  And it will demonstrate effective inter-public service cooperation to deliver essential and critical services the community requires.
